“BORSOD WARHOL” POSTER EXHIBITION

A HIDDEN CINEMATIC TREASURE AT CINEFEST
2024. September 8. 18:00 - September 14. 18:00 Sub Rosa Cafe

Colorful movie posters from the 1970s, discovered under the slate roof of a weekend house in Bogács, are now on display for CineFest visitors to admire. These unique, hand-painted, large-scale posters—known as “pannoes”—are special not only because of how they were found but also due to the mystery surrounding their creator’s identity.

The posters, created between 1970 and 1975, feature scenes from both Eastern and Western films of the era, typically depicting a major scene or the main characters. The unknown artist produced posters for popular films such as ‘West Side Story’, ‘Catch-22’, and ‘The Anatomy of Love’. The two collectors, Marcell Badits (alias Poster Boy) and András Sombor, who acquired these rare posters, drew parallels between the vibrant colors of the posters created by the artist from Borsod and the work of American art icon Andy Warhol. Film posters are significant cultural imprints of the Kádár era. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, artists like Tibor Csernus, Zoltán Herpai, Éva Kakasy, and András Máté created similar works for Mokép, the largest distributor of Hungarian and foreign films. Only one copy of each panno was made, and they were displayed on cinema facades, trams, buses, large fences, and building walls. The “Borsod Warhol” also created such pannoes, which came to light three years ago during the renovation of a weekend house in Bogács. The posters, painted on thick paper and found between the slate roof and the false ceiling, served as sound and thermal insulation for decades, which ultimately preserved them from decay.

The exhibition of the original movie posters by the “Borsod Warhol” opens on 7 September 2024, at 6 PM in the upstairs gallery of the Sub Rosa Cafe with a roundtable discussion. Participants in the discussion include painter and advertising photographer István Bakos, Ferenczy Noémi Prize-winning graphic artist; József Árendás, academic and retired university professor, Munkácsy Mihály Prize-winning graphic designer, and distinguished artist; Marcell Badits, alias Poster Boy, poster expert and appraiser; and András Sombor, curator and collector. The exhibition is open until 15 September, every day from 1 PM to 6 PM.
