Miskolc
Miskolc is the capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. As the most populous city in the largest county of the North-Hungarian Region, it plays a central role in the administration, economic and cultural life of the region. Due to its size and location, it also plays a key role in the region’s economy. Heavy industry was the dominant sector in the town from the 1960s, but its role and importance has been declining since the 1990s. In addition to the many local businesses, in recent years several large multinational companies have been established in Miskolc, providing numerous jobs for both local residents and those living in the surrounding area.
Located at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, Miskolc is a major regional city that also plays a leading role in Hungary’s cultural life. One of its most prominent cultural institutions is the Miskolc National Theatre, which operates multiple performance venues and holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving stone theatre in present-day Hungary and the first to stage performances in the Hungarian language.
Another key cultural venue is the House of Arts (Művészetek Háza), which hosts symphony concerts, popular music performances, and theatre productions, while also being home to the city’s two art-house cinemas, the Uránia and Béke screening rooms. The building also serves as the central venue of the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, traditionally held each September. During the festival’s nine-day programme, screenings and related events take place in three auditoriums within the House of Arts – the Pressburger Hall, the Uránia Cinema, and the Béke Cinema. Since 2017, the Zukor Hall of the Csodamalom Puppet Theatre, located just a short walk from the House of Arts, has also been a permanent festival venue. In 2026, the list of permanent venues was further expanded with the addition of the TTH Stage, situated only a few minutes from the festival centre.
