Miskolc
Miskolc is the capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. As the most populous city in the largest county of the North-Hungarian Region, it plays a central role in the administration, economic and cultural life of the region. Due to its size and location, it also plays a key role in the region’s economy. Heavy industry was the dominant sector in the town from the 1960s, but its role and importance has been declining since the 1990s. In addition to the many local businesses, in recent years several large multinational companies have been established in Miskolc, providing numerous jobs for both local residents and those living in the surrounding area.
Miskolc, located at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, is a major regional city and a leading cultural center. The Miskolc National Theatre is a key cultural institution, operating several venues, and it was the oldest stone theatre in the territory of present-day Hungary, the first to perform in Hungarian language. The House of Arts plays an important role in the cultural life of the city, hosting concerts of orchestral and popular music, theatre performances, and the city’s two art cinemas. This building is the central venue of the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, traditionally held every September, with screenings and related programs taking place in 3 theatres during the 8 days of the festival, and since 2017 in a room of the Csodamalom Puppet Theatre, located close to the House of Arts.
