Lifetime Awards 2021

Tony Gatlif

Freedom, love of justice, and unbridled spiritedness coupled with passion and deep meaning – these are the words that best describe the films of Tony Gatlif. Born in
Algiers as Michel Dahmani, Gatlif has worked with artists such as Fanny Ardant, Gérard Darmon, François Cluzet, Vincent Lindon, Asia Argento, Bea Palya, Birol Ünel and Sergi López. Taking the road, finding your roots and the beauty of a well-lived life appear as topics in several Gatlif films, including Exils, which will be screened at this year’s CineFest. For Exils, Gatlif was awarded the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. The duo of Romain Duris and Lubna Azabal is unforgettable, as are the wonderful pictures and melodies of Gadjo Dilo, Transylvania, Liberté, Geronimo, Latcho Drom or Tom Medina, screened in Cannes this year. Latcho Drom travels from India through Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary to Spain depicting the life of the Romani people. Gatlif’s films are all details of a great journey – and, as the title of Latcho Drom says, it is good to travel with the director.

In 2021 Tony Gatlif receives the Lifetime Achievement Award of the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival at the opening ceremony of the Festival.
