A NEGYEDIK KILÁTÓ – A MISKOLCI MALMOK

A negyedik kilátó - A miskolci malmok / 2025 / Hungary / 80 min

In 2011, the István Mill in Miskolc closed down permanently. In 2017, the abandoned industrial site was acquired by Átrium Ingatlanhasznosító Zrt. Site preparation and the renovation and repurposing of the abandoned buildings began. The 55-meter- tall concrete giant on the site—the former grain silo—will now serve a new function as Miskolc’s newest lookout tower. With the closure of the István Mill, an industry that had always been very important to the city—the milling industry—came to an end. Yet Miskolc had been known as the city of mills since the Middle Ages. The Szinva River, which flows through the town, powered many watermills. It is no coincidence that the history of Miskolc’s mills is closely intertwined with the city’s own history. Almost nothing remains of the old mills for future generations, except for an old building saved in the Jókai housing estate, which now serves as the home of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra. The preservation and renovation of the former buildings of the István Mill is now the latest “mill rescue”.
