ENNIO

Ennio / 2025 / Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Japan / 150 min

He turned his fifth Oscar nomination into a win in 2015—for the score of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, at the age of eighty-six. He had previously been nominated for Days of Heaven, The Mission, The Untouchables, and Bugsy—and even this short list shows just how versatile he was. Who doesn’t recognize the melodies of Once Upon a Time in the West (which our 2015 CineFest Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Claudia Cardinale, hummed along with the audience), or the chilling chase music from The Professional? The nostalgic Cinema Paradiso, the ironic Once Upon a Time in America, the ruthless The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or the playful score of La Cage aux Folles? In 2007, Ennio Morricone was also awarded an honorary Oscar—recognizing one of the greatest composers in film history. A genius collaborator of directors such as Sergio Leone, Terrence Malick, Gillo Pontecorvo, Giuseppe Tornatore, John Boorman, Michael Cimino, Warren Beatty, Roland Joffé, Tarantino, and many others, Morricone is remembered in a special concert by the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra, where audiences can enjoy not only his iconic music but also unique visual elements. And through two exceptional films: Ennio (2021), Giuseppe Tornatore’s beautiful portrait of the late maestro, created shortly after his death; and the Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso, Tornatore’s 1989 masterpiece—a heartfelt tribute to the magic of cinema. Here, it’s not just the music—the story will touch your heart, too.
