Life wasn’t easy for women in Italy in the 1800s, and it didn’t matter that they were composing a new piece at the music institute for the recently elected pope. For her directorial debut, Italian actress Margherita Vicario has chosen to explore this forgotten chapter of history. Her film, which competed at this year’s Berlinale, reminds us that music history is not just about male composers and that sometimes even an art school can be a place from which we need to escape into dreams and fantasies. Gloria! won the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.
