In 1942, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and the Allies were tasked with supplying weapons to help in the fight. An 'Arctic convoy' of merchant ships, crewed by Norwegian civilians, attempted to reach Murmansk with war supplies before the Third Reich could hunt them down. Initially, the British defended the transports from attacks by German submarines and fighter-bombers, but one day the order came to disband the convoy and withdraw their defence. A critical and audience success in its home country, the film had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam
