After serving time for murdering a child, Jan Thomas (Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen) works as a church organist, winning the heart of Anna (Ellen Dorrit Petersen), a single mother and pastor. Using his middle name to hide his past, he is exposed when the victim’s mother (Trine Dyrholm) recognises him. Erik Poppe’s 2008 film, with its striking cinematography and relentless tension, became one of Norway’s biggest box-office successes despite its modest budget.
