“SOMETIMES PLAY REWARDS YOU”

THE LIFE OF I VÁN DARVAS IN PICTURES
2025. September 5. 15:00
Miskolci Galéria

Born in Beje (in present-day Slovakia) and raised in Prague, his mother was Russian, his father Hungarian. Besides Hungarian, he spoke Russian, German, and Czech. He could have become a truly world-renowned actor—or at least a star in the Germanspeaking world—but as he writes in his excellent memoir Footnotes, the “warmth of the fold”, the intimacy of Budapest and the Hungarian language, always held him back from leaving. Thus, he became one of the most significant figures in 20thcentury Hungarian theater and film. In Footnotes, Darvas recalls his childhood and beloved Prague with playfulness and subtle irony. He reflects on his imprisonment after 1956, and on a theatrical and film career that, though broken by the revolution, later rose again. CineClassics and the Miskolc Gallery commemorate the artist— born exactly one hundred years ago, on June 14, 1925— with an exhibition that highlights the turning points of his life.
