COLOURS OF TIME

La venue de l'avenir / 2025 / France, Belgium / 124 min

Cédric Klapisch alternates between the life of Adèle at the end of the 19th century and the lives of her four modernday grandchildren. The cousins, now estranged from one another, set out on a journey to discover the extraordinary life of their ancestor. “The clash between the modern era and 1895 explores the fate of a family and compares two periods. Before 1900 was the age of technological inventions: the railway, electricity, cinema, and more. It was the birth of photography, and painting was also evolving. It was an exciting time, just like today, with artificial intelligence and social networks.” The film also examines the relationship between still and moving images. “In 1870 and 1890, photography was already highly present, and the world wondered whether it would replace painting. In the end, photography spurred the development of painting, for example with the rise of Impressionism. We hadn’t yet reached abstraction, but even then people questioned the role of painting and colour, which at the time were still absent from photography.”
