PELLE THE CONQUEROR

Following the death of his wife, the Swedish Lasse and his son Pelle move from their hometown in search for some job. They go to Denmark where the man finds work in a manor. In spite of the constant humiliation they have to suffer they endure everything in order to save enough money to go to America. While attending school Pelle also helps his father with his work. When it is time to go, Lasse realizes that he is too old for the journey. The fi lm, depicting moments of great poverty, is based on a novel written by Danish writer, Martin Andersen Nexø in the fi rst half of the 20th century. “Pelle the Conqueror” won the Palme d’Or in 1988, and the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1989.
