Northwest China. Two outsiders – Ma, an introverted old bachelor and the disabled, infertile Guiying – join their lives in an arranged marriage. Director Ruijun Li masterfully combines the realism of a story of raw rural life with a fairy-tale belief in the power of unexpectedly flourishing feelings. Instead of complaining
about the world’s injustice, Ma and Guiyng support and care for each other, which helps them endure the troubles of everyday life surprisingly well. The permanent experience of exploitation and poverty, however, has an impact on their existence and puts the hard-won happiness into question.
