“THE WARHOL OF BORSOD” POSTER EXHIBITION

2024.09.07. 12:22

A hidden treasure of cinematic history at CineFest, or ‘Warhol of Borsodi’ emerges from beneath the roof tiles.

Colourful cinema posters from the 1970s have been found under the slate roof of a summer house in Bogács and are now on display at CineFest. The unique, hand-painted, large-scale posters – known as panneaux – are special not only because of the place where they were found: the identity of their creator is still a mystery.

The paintings, created between 1970 and ’75, show scenes from Eastern and Western films of the time, usually a highlight or a protagonist in a film. The hitherto unknown artist produced posters for such hit films as West Side Story, Catch-22, Five Easy Pieces, Chato’s Land, Little Big Man, Cactus Flower, Working Class Goes to Heaven and The Anatomy of Love. The two collectors – Marcell Badits, aka Poster Boy, and András Sombor – who bought the rare and unique posters drew parallels between the American icon Andy Warhol and the Borsod artist because of their unique and powerful use of colour. The film posters were a crucial cultural imprint of the Kádár era. In the sixties, seventies and eighties, artists such as Tibor Csernus, Zoltán Herpai, Éva Kakasy and András Máté made them. They all worked for Mokép, who were distributors of the biggest Hungarian and foreign films.

There was only ever one of each panneux, and they appeared on the facades of cinemas, the sides of trams and buses, large fences and house walls. The “Warhol of Borsod ” created such panneaux that came to light three years ago during the renovation of a summer house in Bogacs: when the roof was being demolished, the posters were found between the slate roof and the suspended ceiling. The images are painted on thick paper, and served as sound and heat insulators for decades – in fact, they were saved from disappearing thanks to this repurposed function.

The exhibition of original cinema posters by the Warhol of Borsod opens on Saturday, September 7 at 6 pm in the upstairs exhibition room of Sub Rosa Cafe (Miskolc, Széchenyi utca 21.).

The opening will be followed by a round table discussion with István Bakos, graphic designer and painter, József Árendás, graphic designer, and the two owners of the poster collection, Marcell Badits alias Plakátfiú and András Sombor.
The exhibition is on display from 8 to 14 September.
