Day 1 (14 September)

2018. September 14. Friday 10:10
In the last 14 years the Jameson CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival became the most well-known and, according to the remarks, the most well-loved film festival of Hungary. Today the 15th Jameson CineFest opens its gates. Up until next Sunday film professionals and the audiences have a chance to meet the most prominent, most valuable movies of the last year. All films in the competition and Open Eye programs are Hungarian premieres. And what a opening day it is! We have the chance to meet one of the actors from ‘The Karate Kid Part 2’.

The opening ceremony is held in the largest room, Pressburger, at 5 pm followed by the screening of Zanussi’s masterpiece from 1984, “The Year of the Quiet Sun’. The opening ceremony and the screening is an event by invitation only. The other programs of the day are opened to the public and, as always, are free of charge. Please note that seats cannot be reserved, so it is probably wise to show up in time. For those who wish to watch Zanussi’s film there is a public screening in the Zukor room at 7 pm.

From 8 pm the Béke room hosts three blocks of the “Meeting of Festivals” program. The Romanian Alter-native and the German Grenzland selections are followed by the selection from the Rome Independent Film Festival.

At 8:30 pm the first film from the feature competition program is screened in the Pressburger room. The ‘Ultra Low’ is a meta drama that takes an unfiltered look behind the scenes at the struggles of the independent film world. It’s a story of a filmmaking team that’s already sacrificed to make several feature films. Upon learning the news that their latest endeavor will not be accepted into any top tier film festival, the team has hit rock bottom. With heavy hearts, they push each other to pick up and move forward on development of their next feature film. The screening is followed by Q&A with the filmmakers: Nicholas Gyeney director, Yuji Okumoto actor (The Karate Kid Part 2., The Game, Truman Show, Pearl Harbor, Big Momma’s House 2.).

At 9 pm at the Zukor room the first one of the films of the MusicDocs program starts. The film is about Konrad „Conny” Plank who was undoubtedly one of the most innovative sound designers of his time. The documentary is the search for the person and producer Conny Plank, a journey through music history, a son getting to know his father and a soundtrack that has influenced millions of music fans over three decades.

At the same time, at 9 pm the Uránia room hosts the first block of the short feature competition program with works by Swedish, Romanian, Israeli, Russian and French directors.

At 11 pm another film ‘Beta Test’ by Nicholas Gyeney is screened in the Uránia. In this movie champion gamer Max Troy discovers events in a new video game are being mirrored in the real world, and must join forces with the game’s protagonist, Orson Creed, to unravel the conspiracy before the game’s sinister plot overwhelms the city.
