Norwegian, American, Kazakh, and Iraqi films among the winners: the awards of the 21st CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival have been presented
On September 13, 2025, the awards of the 21st CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival were presented. Joachim Trier’s new film, Sentimental Value, won the festival’s main prize, the Pressburger Award, while the jury’s grand prize, the Zukor Award, went to Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of the Water. The Iraqi film The President’s Cake, which was made with Hungarian post-production assistance, received three awards, while the audience award went to With Friends Like These. The CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival presents the Ambassador of European Cinema award to outstanding European filmmakers. The aim is to recognize European artists who have made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of the continent’s film industry. Previous recipients include Juliette Binoche, Jean-Marc Barr, Franco Nero, and Vanessa Redgrave, and in 2025, one of the most significant figures in contemporary Norwegian cinema, Erik Poppe, will appear on the stage of the House of Arts.

As in previous years, the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival will not only showcase the biggest foreign festival hits, but also the latest Hungarian films. This year’s 21th CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival will take place from 5 to 13 September 2025, as previously announced. The biggest international film festival in Hungary is now calling for entries in the categories: feature films and documentaries (deadline: 31 May), and CineNewWave for emerging filmmakers (deadline: 30 June). To close the 20th jubilee of CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, a book launch and press conference took place on 11 December at the Sub Rosa Café in Miskolc. At the event, József Tóth-Szántai, mayor of Miskolc, gave a welcome speech, and the booklet “The History of the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival 2004-2024,” looking back on the past 20 years of the festival, was presented. Tibor Bíró, festival director, and Péter Madaras, programme director, outlined the plans for next year’s CineFest. The anniversary booklet will be available in all libraries in Miskolc.
